Debbie Giannopoulos (also known professionally as Demetra George) graduated from Putnam City High School in 1970 and studied voice at Oklahoma City University. Crowned Miss Oklahoma in 1972, she pursued opera training under mentors Frances Bible and Nina Hinson and shortened her stage name to Demetra George. She won the San Francisco Western Region Opera Auditions, was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and other international competitions, and made her professional debut with the Los Angeles Pops. Over the course of her career she has performed with more than 170 symphony orchestras worldwide, sung thousands of concerts and appeared for four U.S. presidents. Her recording “Demetra George Sings Love Arias” received Grammy nominations in 2000 and 2001. Together with her husband, opera singer and businessman Mike Mustafoglu, she co-founded a philanthropic organization that provides support for blind and underprivileged women and children. She continues to share her passion for music and community service while representing Oklahoma on the world stage.
